SKITOURING CIRCUIT IN THE OETZTAL

Skitouring Circuit at the end of the Ötztal valley

Day 1: At the meeting point in Vent at the end of the Ötztal, we will check and distribute all the equipment before heading off up to the Martin Busch hut (2501m). Upon arrival we will check into the accommodation before we will refresh avalanche Transceiver searching skills. In the evening we will speak about the further plan for our traverse. 

7km & 600m ascent, approx. 4 hours

On Day 2 we will head off on our first summit attempt of the Similaun (3606m). The gentle glacier lead us up nicely to the steeper slopes of the summit. 

Today we are aiming for the Similaun hut where we spent our second night in the mountains. 

5km & 1100m ascent, approx. 6 hours

On Day 3 of the traverse we go past the finding place of Ötzi the Ice man. He was found not far from the hut across the border to Italy. On the way we will decide if make also a summit today. Possible options would be the Finail Spitze (3514m). The glacier underneath the summit leads down nicely towards the Hochjoch Hospiz which we will reach after a short climb again. 

2km & 700m ascent, approx. 6 hours

If conditions allow, on Day 4 we will reach the summit of the Fluchtkogel (3497m). This can be done by various means of ascent – either a steep slope or a wide open glacier. We will make use of harnesses and ropes to ascend the steepest and most exposed passages. This is certainly be one of the highlights of the tour! After the summit, we have a never ending glacier descent down to the Vernagt hut (2755m) – pure enjoyment.

3km & 1000m ascent, approx. 6 hours

On the final 5th Day the second highest peak in Austria is wait for us, the Wildspitze (3768m). Via the Brochkogel leads our route up on the higher plateaus of the glacier until we get a first glance of the summit. The final meters up to the top we leave our skies behind and scramble up the easy ridge to the highest point. The descent down to Vent is long and variable and a perfect end of the tour. Abseiling included!

8km & 1000m ascent, approx. 6 hours

Once back in Vent we will finish off with a well-deserved Austrian coffee and cake!
